Golden globe awards 2024 live updates: oppenheimer and poor things win best picture

Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer has won the biggest award of the night, Best Pictre Drama. The Hindustan Times review of the film added, “At its core, Oppenheimer is about the messy, deeply unnerving intersection between science and politics. How selfish, self-serving leaders are awarded unbridled power. How wars and governments corrupt, contaminate, and bastardize science.”

Read our full review here.

Lily Gladstone wins Best Actress for Killers of the Flower Moon. As one of the last Osage standing, Mollie, Lily exudes an easy charm. She effectively holds her own in front of stalwarts like Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio, underlining the film's theme that Native Americans like her have so much to offer.
Poor Things wins Best Picture (Comedy or Musical). It won over Barbie, which was considered to be the hot favourite. Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things is a surreal Frankenstein-esque fairy tale starring Emma Stone.

Paul Giamatti wins his third Golden Globe for The Holdovers. He dedicated his win to his son who recently graduated from college.

Succession has won the Best TV Series Drama. Succession is a critically acclaimed HBO series that revolves around the dysfunctional Roy family, owners of a global media empire, as they navigate power struggles, betrayal, and corporate intrigue. The show, known for its sharp writing and stellar performances, delves into the complexities of family dynamics and the high-stakes world of media conglomerates.

Sarah Snook wins her second Golden Globe for her portrayal of Shiobhan (Shiv) Roy in Succession. “This show changed my life,” she said about the show in her speech. She beat the likes of Emma Stone, Helen Mirren and Imelda Staunton in the category.

The Bear wins Best Comedy/Musical Series. Pacy, hilarious and sometimes heartbreaking, The Bear tells the story of young fine-dining chef Carmy who returns to bring back his dead brother's sandwich joint to life. The second season showed him exploring love again while still suffering the traumas of a less than perfect childhood.

Beef wins Best Limited Series, Anthology Series Or Motion Picture Made For Television. The Netflix show was one of the year's most-talked about. “Spread over 10 episodes, the world of Beef takes time to make space for its characters first. The initial episodes struggle to maintain its connect akin to its protagonists, but look closer, and creator Lee Sung Jin along with director Hikari work expertly to create a specific cultural perspective,” Barbie wins Cinematic And Box Office Achievement award over Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, John Wick, Mission Impossible, Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse and more.

Billie Eilish won the Best Original Song award for What Was I Made For from Barbie. “I was sad and depressed at the time. Writing that song kind of saved me a little bit,” Billie said as she accepted the award.

Ludwig Göransson wins the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Score. He won it for his stellar compostions for Oppenheimer.

Cillian Murphy has won the Globe for his role as J Robert Oppenheimer in Oppenheimer. Cillian plays the Father of the Atomic Bomb for perfection, showcasing the storm that raged inside him after the deadliest invention of the modern world.

In a major upset, Emma Stone won the Best Actress (Musical or Comedy) award over Margot Robbie (Barbie). Poor Things is Emma's second collaboration with Yorgos Lanthimos after The Favourite.

Emma won for her no-holds-barred turn in surreal, sexy bildungsroman.

Christopher Nolan wins the Best Diector award for Oppenheimer. This was his seventh nomination and first win, ever. He beat the likes of Martin Scorsese in the category.

Oppenheimer is based on the life of J Robert Oppenheimer, the Father of the atomic bomb. It charts his journey from young physicist to a man responsible for one of the deadliest inventions of all time.

The Boy And The Heron won the Best Motion Picture (Animated) Award.

“Suck it Pedro!,” said Kieran Culkin as he accepted the Best Actor (Drama) award for his role as Roman Roy in Succession. He recalled how he won a GG 20 years ago but thought the moment would never come again in his life. In Succession, Kieran played the youngest and wildest of the Roy children, all hoping, plotting to be the next CEO of the Waystar Roy Co.

Ayo Edebiri won Best Actress, Comedy/musical for The Bear. The award marks her first Golden Globe win and her first nomination.

French film Anatomy of a Fall wins its second award for the night: Best Motion Picture Non English Language. Anatomy of a Fall has been widely hailed as one of the finest films of the year. It won at the Palme D'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Ricky Gervais wins the award for his show Armageddon. The HT review of the special was not too flattering though. “Armageddon, is a masterclass in the art of stagnation. It's a comedic exploration of the end of the world, and one can't help but feel that perhaps the real apocalypse is the lack of evolution in Gervais's comedy,” the review read.

Jeremy Allen White wins Best Actor: Comedy/Musical for The Bear season 2. This is Jeremy's second nomination and second Golden Globes win. In the show, Jeremy plays Carmy, a young fine-dining chef, who decides to bring his dead brother's sandwich joint back to life with his team of misfits.

French film Anatomy of a Fall wins Best Screenplay. In this award-winning psychological thriller, a celebrated writer is put on trial when her husband falls to his death from their secluded chalet. What starts as a murder investigation soon becomes a gripping journey into the depths of a destructive marriage.

Matthew McFadyen wins his first Golden Globe for his brilliant portrayal of the opportunist ‘human grease stain’ Tom in HBO's hit show Succession.

Elizabeth Debicki wins Best Supporting Actress award for her portrayal of Princess Diana on Netflix's The Crown. The final season of The Crown is split into two portions. The first part chronicled the last days of Princess Diana before her death in a car crash in Paris. Elizabeth delievered a heartbreaking perfomance as the kind, beloved but melancholic former royal who was hounded by the paparazzi.

After an ad break, host Jo Koy said, "The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? At the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift." As the camera panned to Taylor, she did not laugh or smile, but took a sip from her champage glass.

Steven Yeun wins his first Golden Globe for Beef. He brokeout with his role in The Walking Dead. The tally for Beef currently stands at two!

Ali Wong wins Best Actress in Limited Series, Anthology Series Or Motion Picture Made For Television for his hit Netflix show Beef. The show is about a man and a woman who start a beef after getting into a road accident.

Ali Wong is a renowned stand-up comedian, actress, and writer known for her sharp wit, fearless humour, and distinctive comedic style. With her breakthrough Netflix specials Baby Cobra and Hard Knock Wife, Wong has become a prominent figure in the comedy world.

Robert Downey Jr wins Best Supporting Actor for Oppenheimer. It's his third GG win ever. He played the villainous Lewis Strauss in the hit Christopher Nolan film. “I took a Beta blocker so this should be a breeze,” he said as he began his speech.

Da'Vine Joy Randolph won her first Golden Globe for The Holdovers. 'Oh Mary, you have changed my life," she said about her role on the show.

Host Jo Coy is off to a daring start. He roasted Robert DeNiro for getting his girlfriend pregnant at 80. “It must have been CGI,” he said. The comedian also mentioned the scandalous scene from Satlburn featuring Barry Keoghan and his penis. He even dragged Oppenheimer for its long runtime. “With Oppenheimer, I learned that even scientists get laid.”

Taylor Swift has descended on the red carpet in a bright, glittery green dress. Her film, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour is nominated in the newly-announced 'CINEMATIC AND BOX OFFICE ACHIEVEMENT' category.

Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey represented their hit HBO show The Last of Us at the awards night. Pedro arrived with his arm in a sling, wearing an all-black outfit. Bella looked sweet in her blue jacket and cream pants.

The Last of Us is nominated in Best Drama category. Pedro also has a Best Actor nod and so does Bella in the Best Actress category.

Emily Blunt and John Krasinkli were spotted at the red carpet. She is nominated in Best Supporting Actress category for Oppenheimer, one of the film's eight nominations for the night.

Brendan Hunt and Jason Sudeikis arrived together for the show. They star together as Coarch Beard and Coach Ted Lasso in Apple TV's brilliant and warm series, Ted Lasso. Jason, who has split with his wife Olivia Wilde confessed to having dating apps on his phone.

Leonardo DiCaprio arrived with Lily Gladstone for the Golden Globes 2024 ceremony. The actors are representing their film Killers of the Flower Moon at the awards show. When asked about his scruffy new look, Leo said that it is for an upcoming movie (that is not with Martin Scorsese) but he wouldn't reveal anymore. He also said that Lily did not need any help with navigating the awards night. The actor also showed his Osage pin on his coat lapel.

Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer-- which tells the story of the inventor of the atomic bomb -- has eight nominations.

The favorite to win awards for best drama film, best director, and best score, Oppenheimer focuses on the rivalry between a brilliant scientist and a powerful politician, played by Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. respectively.

They are strong contenders for best lead drama actor and supporting actor.

Margot Robbie arrived for the party dressed up as Super Star Barbie, keeping up with her tradition of replicating Barbie outfits for the film's promotions in July. She was also asked about Lady Gaga playing Harley Quinn, a role she played in a bunch of WB movies. She thinks Gaga would ‘crush it’.

Greta Gerwig's Barbie, which turned nostalgia for the beloved doll into a sharp satire about misogyny and female empowerment, leads the way with nine Globes nods.

It is tipped to win awards for best comedy film and best screenplay, and boasts three of the six contenders for best song. As the year's highest grossing movie, it is also likely to claim a newly created trophy for box office achievement.

Khalid Abdalla played Dodi Fayed, opposite Elizabeth Debicki's Princess Diana in the recently-wrapped up Netflix series The Crown. Khalid delivered an earnest performance as Diana's boyfriend who died alongside her in the Paris car crash. He is not nominated tonight.

Jo Koy will live out his childhood dream of hosting the Globes — which is looking to return to form after being tarnished following years of scandal. He calls his upcoming duties a “very big moment.”

“This is a throwback to my childhood, and now I'm the guy who's onstage,” said Koy, the second Asian host in Globes history. (Sandra Oh emceed the show in 2019.) He wants to the inspire those from the Asian community in his first major hosting gig.

Saltburn star Rosamund Pike, American Fiction actor Jeffrey Wright and Abbott Elementary creator and star Quinta Brunson were among the first to arrive on the red carpet outside the Beverly Hilton hotel. Designer gowns swayed in winds of roughly 15 miles (25 km) per hour. Afternoon temperatures hovered around 55 degrees Fahrenheit (13 degrees Celsius), a chilly day for Southern California.

ananya panday looks visibly upset at mumbai airport; netizens troll paps by saying ‘india lost and you’re asking her to smile?’

Ananya Panday – the daughter of actor Chunky Panday and social media influencer Bhavana Pandey – was spotted wearing a white tee with light grey track pants at the Mumbai airport this morning. However, her face appeared visibly upset, so much so that she did not even smile at the shutterbugs present at the airport. While some of you might feel that the 25-year-old Bollywood actress was rude to paps by not greeting them, many social media users have trolled the paparazzi instead for expecting her to smile just a day after India lost the ICC World Cup Final.

Ananya Panday is NOT all smiles

Ananya Panday arrived to board a flight this morning at the Mumbai airport. In a hush-hush movement, she did not smile at the paps and quickly entered the airport premises. Just moments before entering the airport, she said that she was running late and would not be able to get pictures clicked for the day.

This development did not go down well with a section of social media users. Apparently, the camerapersons and paparazzi present at the Mumbai airport today were trolled by social media users for asking Ananya Panday to smile a day after India’s loss at the ICC World Cup Final 2023.

One X (formerly known as Twitter) user said, “India lost the World Cup Final last day. Why would she smile?”

“She has to go to work just a day after India lost #WCFinal. Imagine, how difficult it is! Paps are stupid for asking her to smile,” wrote another X user.

One more X user said, “Why should Ananya smile all the time, esp after India’s loss at the World Cup Final?!”

“Why can’t paps leave them alone on a day like THIS,” wrote one more anonymous X user.

Meanwhile, Ananya was recently seen in a cameo appearance in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. She was also seen in the movie Dream Girl 2.

cricket world cup 2023 final: anushka sharma and athiya shetty's disappointed look after india’s loss to australia | see video

Everyone all across the globe was waiting with bated breath for today’s cricket match between India and Australia. This was the match which was the deciding factor for both the sides, who had worked tirelessly their way up to reach the finals. And after putting up a tough fight from both the sides, it was ultimately Australia, who became the winner of the extremely prestigious ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

No sooner India lost the match, every Indian’s heart sunk with sadness written all over. After the last ball was bowled and Australia won the match, both Anushka Sharma and Athiya Shetty were one of the millions whose faces wore a sad look. A video of their dejected faces is fast becoming viral. While it was Anushka Sharma’s husband, Virat Kohli and Athiya Shetty’s husband KL Rahul with other team members, were out on the field playing seamlessly to make India win the match.

For the unversed, today’s match was the final match of the tournament, as it was the deciding match. The two counties who were playing for the World Cup were India and Australia, both of whom have definitely worked their way up to reach the final spot. No sooner had the last bowl of the second innings been bowled, it was declared that Australia became the ultimate winner in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Seeing that India had lost the crucial match, both Anushka Sharma and Athiya Shetty became extremely sad and dejected, a feeling that every Indian across the world must have experienced. The otherwise chirpy and smiling Anushka Sharma was not even in a mood to speak anything.

For those who missed the final match between India and Australia, let us tell you that, India batted first and made a total of 240 runs in 50 overs. Post that, Australia went on to beat India by 6 wickets to win the ICC World Cup 2023. While Travis Head was named as the ‘Player of the Match’, it was India’s very own Virat Kohli who bagged the ‘Player of the Tournament’.

four boundaries in 40 overs: team india's worst nightmare comes true on the biggest day of their lives

It may not have been a 5/3 type of a collapse, but a capitulation of sorts nonetheless. As the entire nation plunges into disappointment, heartbreak, somberness and collective grief following India's defeat in the final of the World Cup, scribes, including yours truly, will dwell into reasons behind this outcome. Was it the toss? Conditions? Dew? Rohit Sharma's shot? Virat Kohli's dismissal? Or KL Rahul's? No, the answer is primarily two numbers. Only four boundaries were scored in the final 40 overs of India's innings. And frankly, that right there marked the biggest point of no return.

Here's some trivia around it. And boy, let it sink in, Of those four boundaries, Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj hit two. It is the joint-fewest by India in a completed innings since July 2011. The last time they hit fewer boundaries after the 10th over of an ODI innings when they batted at least 40 overs in total was in 1999. There was no coming back. This may not exactly fall in the timid or the fearful category but it certainly wasn't the bravest either. After Pat Cummins won the toss and opted to bowl, Rohit knew it was advantage Australia, and that his 'we were looking to bat first' was nothing more than just a cover up. Simply put, the pitch behaved in three different ways throughout the contest. To put it into further perspective, it was as if India's innings began on a Day 3 Nagpur surface, ended on Day 5 approximately five hours later and then transformed into a whole other Day 1 Adelaide pitch when Australia batted.

Throughout India's innings, only one narrative did the rounds – on the commentary box and social media alike. If no dew, 240 is a competitive total. If no dew, Australia could be made to look chasing 300. Or how Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja would eat them up. Breaking news: Both spinners went wicketless and there was almost little to no dew. Yet Australia cantered home with seven overs to spare. In order to gauge the stark difference as to how the pitch behaved in the two innings, look no further than how Marnus Labuschagne kept dabbing balls around for singles, while Rahul couldn't. Every time the latter tried to give the ball direction, or tried to open his bat face, the ball went either uppish or straight to the fielder. At one point, it had become so irritating that even singles were being egged on like a Rohit pull shot for six.

I say Rahul, because Kohli's 54 came at the strike-rate of 85.71. As long as he was batting, even if the boundaries had dried up, Kohli kept hopes alive that at some stage, he would take off. Kohli's role in this World Cup had been that of an anchor, and with Rohit, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer gone, the stage was set for him to play till the end of the innings. The frustrating wait grew. The overs progressed from 15 to 20… and then 25; without that damned boundary as the Ahmedabad crowd's decibel levels, which had reached a peak seeing Rohit on song, had gone, dropped incredibly. In the 29th, Kohli played on. Sucker punch.

Between over 11 and 40, Australia picked three wickets for 80 runs. And truth be told, it was game over by then. A lot of it should be attributed to Australia's freak fielding but then again, watching a team that has consistently posted substantial totals struggle to find boundaries or even milk singles as the run rate gradually came crashing down from seven an over to less than five, was uncomfortable.

Rahul's snail-paced innings was a bigger letdown. He has taken responsibility whenever India have lost early wickets but the version of him that turned up on Sunday was eerily similar to the what he so desperately has tried to move away from. He was rushed, looked unbalanced against Starc and Hazlewood and looking to play full 50 overs, entered the proverbial shell. Rahul is a fine batter against spin, doesn't fall for traps. He uses his feet to go square of the wicket, and in front of it. Yesterday, the little lapse in approach prevented all that from happening.

So, why this overcautious approach? Because contrary to the general belief, India's batting doesn't run as deep. Neither was it tested. Suryakumar Yadav is a misfit in ODIs, and Jadeja has been found wanting against quality spin and reverse swing. The vulnerability which after Hardik Pandya's absence was so well guarded until now, Australia exposed it. Hence, India's obsession with either a Shardul Thakur or an Axar Patel as a caution at No. 8. With neither around, nor Ashwin, Rahul was forced to take a more restrained course, which even spilled on to his wicketkeeping as he regularly struggled to contain byes.

Should he and Kohli have shown more intent? In a perfect world, and more so on a perfect pitch, surely. But the sluggish and tacky Pitch 5, expected to play in India's favour, backfired. The home team has a say in deciding the kind of surface they want to play on, but in this case, the team management erred in its assessment. Given that batting is India's strength, the reason behind opting for a surface that encouraged a stop-and-wait approach remains unclear and may never be known.

When the dust settles and the players are able to put this result behind – and they will, because sport is about moving on – hopefully the guys won't beat themselves up over it. Nevertheless, they may just however reflect on those 40 overs of adversity in hindsight.
