14 years of vinnaithaandi varuvaayaa: as gvm’s romantic drama gets re-release, netizens shower more love for trisha and simbu’s film

Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa, the Tamil romantic drama starring actors Silambarasan and Trisha in the lead roles, completed 14 years on Monday since its release on February 26, 2010. The film, written and directed by filmmaker Gautham Vasudev Menon, went on to become of the iconic and romantic classic films to have come out from Tamil industry.

With the film completing 14 years, the romantic drama witnessed a re-release in selective theatres in Tamil Nadu. Many took to their social media handles to appreciate the film and shared their experiences of watching it again.

Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa revolves around the romantic relationship between a Malayali Christian girl Jessie (played by Trisha) and Tamil Hindu boy Karthik (Silambarasan), whose family backgrounds come their way to be together. VTV became one of the commercial successes in Gautham Menon’s career and redefined romance dramas.

On Monday, the film marked 14 years since its release and had a re-run theatres. Many took to their social media handles to post about their experience and lauded how the film was still relevant and entertaining after all this time.

Written and directed by Gautham Menon, one of the successes of the film was its music scored by AR Rahman, marking his first collaboration with the director. Tracks like Hosanna, Anbil Avan were chartbusters at the time of release.

The film also starred Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa Ganesh (who earned his monicker through the film's fame), Babu Antony, and Lakshmi Ramakrishnan, among others. Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa was simultaneously made in Telugu as Ye Maaya Chesave, starring Naga Chaitanya and Samantha Prabhu. Eventually, the film was remade in Hindi as Ekk Deewana Tha with Prateik Babbar and Amy Jackson.

Pankaj Udhas died on Monday

Pankaj Udhas died in Mumbai on Monday at the age of 72. News agency PTI citing a family source, reported that he singer died around 11 am at the Breach Candy hospital. "With a very heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the sad demise of Padmashri Pankaj Udhas on 26th February 2024 due to a prolonged illness," Nayab wrote in an Instagram post.

Anup Jalota talked about his friend

Singer Anup Jalota recalled his close bond with the late ghazal maestro. Speaking with news agency ANI, he said, "I have lost my friend. People have lost Pankaj Udhas, lost a great Ghazal singer. I have lost my friend. The trio of Pankaj (Udhas), Talat (Aziz), and me was very famous. We did a lot of concerts together. I am very sad about the demise of Pankaj Udhas. He took Ghazal to every household and made a place for himself in people's hearts. It was a great contribution and can never be forgotten."

He added, "I had met him 4 to 5 months ago. He was very weak. He had lost weight. I was looking forward to meeting him. I could not meet him for 2 to 3 months. This is very sad news. We also started the Khazana Ghazal festival to give a platform to young artists. We wanted to introduce the emerging ghazal singers. We wanted ghazal to be alive in the hearts of people and Pankaj Udhas also wanted the same."

About Pankaj Udhas' life, career

Pankaj Udhas was born on May 17, 1951, in Jetpur, Gujarat. In addition to ghazals, he was well-known for his film work. In 1980, he gained widespread popularity for his solo ghazal album Aahat. Later, he recorded other successes, including Mukarar (1981), Tarrannum (1982), Mehfil (1983), and many more.

Some of his popular renditions are Chitthi Aayi Hai, Chandani Raat Mein, Na Kajre Ki Dhaar, Aur Ahista Kijiye Baatein, Ek Taraf Uska Ghar and Thodi Thodi Piya Karo. He also made a mark as a playback singer in many Hindi films, including Naam, Saajan and Mohra.

About the documentary

To Kill a Tiger directed by Nisha Pahuja, has won two dozen prizes throughout the world, including Best Documentary at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, the Amplify Voices Award at TIFF, and Best Feature Documentary at the Canadian Screen prizes. The Directors Guild of Canada recognised Pahuja with the 2023 Excellence in Documentary Award. Despite not having any distribution in the US, it made the Oscar documentary shortlist and was nominated.

According to Deadline, Nish spent eight years working on the film, which centres on Ranjit, a poor farmer whose 13-year-old daughter Kiran became the victim of a brutal sexual assault. Pressured by his village to drop charges against the three young men accused of the attack, Ranjit and his wife Jiganti refused. The film takes place in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand. To Kill a Tiger, a release comments, “serves as a testament to the boundless love and unyielding determination of a devoted father for his cherished daughter.”

The Udhas family issued a statement that read, “With a heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the sad demise of Padmashri Pankaj Udhas on 26th February 2024 due to a prolonged illness.” Pankaj is survived by wife Farida Udhas, daughters Nayaab and Reva Udhas, and brothers Nirmal and Manhar Udhas, who are also singers.

Pankaj is best known for lending his voice to memorable tracks like Chitthi Aayi Hai from Mahesh Bhatt's 1986 crime thriller Naam, Chandi Jaisa Rang Hai from Pravin Bhatt's 1998 film Ek Hi Maqsad, Aaj Phir Tumpe from Feroz Khan's 1988 action thriller Dayavan, Jeeye To Jeeye Kaise from Lawrence D'Souza's 1991 romantic film Saajan, and Chhupana Bhi Nahi Aata from Abbas-Mustan's 1993 revenge thriller Baazigar among others.

Shah Rukh Khan is back on Twitter after weeks and replied to some sweet videos and posts from his fan accounts. One such fan account had posted a video of Allu Arjun's son Allu Ayaan singing the song Lutt Putt Gaya from Shah Rukh's last release, Dunki.
