Bhootnii Review: A Horror Comedy That Misses Both Laughs and Scares
The Bhootnii movie review
Cast: Sanjay Dutt, Mouni Roy, Sunny Singh, Palak Tiwari
Director: Sidhaant Sachdev
Rating: ★★.5
You know what stings a bit? When you notice that flicker in a movie, it surely had the ability to be so much greater. The Bhootnii, featuring Sanjay Dutt as a ghost hunter, alongside Sunny Singh, Palak Tiwari, and Mouni Roy in the main roles - is one of those.
What is The Bhootnii about
It centers around the yearly Virgin Tree pooja (conducted at Hindu College in Delhi, although it is fictional in the film). The tale suggests that anyone who prays to the tree on Valentine’s Day annually will find their ‘mohabbat’. Shantanu (Sunny), a man who is heartbroken after his girlfriend departs, feels desolate and longs for love. Enter Mohabbat — quite literally, in the shape of a ghost by that name (Mouni).
The Bhootnii, penned and helmed by Sidhaant Sachdev, incorporates elements from every horror comedy you have encountered. It particularly takes inspiration from the Stree franchise — featuring an irate ghost, a circle of friends, with humorous one-liners inserted throughout. The creators seize the opportunity to reference Naagin, which is Mouni’s signature role. Before we articulate it ourselves, they already do so with this line from one of the supporting characters, ‘It feels like I’m watching a live shoot of the Naagin serial! ’
