Suriya Elevates Karthik Subbaraj’s Gritty Yet Romantic Throwback

Retro movie plot:

Paarivel Kannan (Suriya) is the foster son of gangster Thilagan (Joju George), who despises him and regards him merely as adequate to serve as his thug. However, when Paari chooses to change his reckless lifestyle, aiming to begin anew with his beloved Rukmini (Pooja Hegde), his aggressive behavior prevents him from finding peace, particularly after he declines to disclose the location of the final delivery task he completes for Thilagan.

What if Karthik Subbaraj (who made an impressive debut with Pizza) creates his blockbuster film with Suriya, which takes inspiration from his earlier movie Jigarthanda Double X, incorporates hints of subtle allusions to the actor, while still showcasing his typical quirks and eccentricities, not to overlook the struggle between the oppressed and the oppressor that unfolds in the world of a gangster? Is that a bit overwhelming? Nonetheless, Karthik Subbaraj crafts a somewhat cohesive film that is highly indulgent yet engaging. That essentially sums up Retro for you. It's not suitable for everyone, but Karthik Subbaraj does deliver something. We will discuss that shortly.
